The 2013 Tomie de Paola Award calls for a black and white image based on a passage, line or description from “Tom Sawyer,” “Little Women” or “The Yearling.”
I selected a passage from “The Yearling” by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings that describes the mating dance of the whooping crane as the basis for my illustration. The scene is a marsh in central Florida during the Depression. Jody Baxter and his father Penny come upon the birds at the end of a day of fishing.
Here is a link to my entry and a link to the entire SCBWI gallery of enteries. For the last week in January 2013, I also used this image for the Illustration Friday topic “Wings.”
