Doodle Day: 2 – 4 Year Old Child 09/09/2013

DoodleDay_20130909_2-4YROLDThe doodle challenge for today and tomorrow is to practice drawing children between the ages of 2 and 4. Considering the vast change in physical appearance that occurs in this stage of development, I could not do this with one drawing so I have included a 2-year old boy and a 4-year old girl.

The most useful observation, I think, is that head size does not change very much. Changes in the proportions of facial features are more significant. The nose is longer and the chin and jaw become more prominent as fat deposits on the lower face and the neck decrease. The torso, neck, arms, legs and feet extend in length. A two year old can walk heel to toe rather than flat footed. The boy’s outstretched arms are not for balance but because I excised him from a scene in which he is reaching for a kitten.

I hope this post has been useful to anyone portraying young children. Please look up the Doodle Day group on Facebook or the On My Mind blog to join in, and please leave a comment on this post.  I look forward to hearing from you.
